The "Brent Box Sets" concept
for fingering Modes on Guitar

Set #1: The Red Box

In figure 1.06, a second set of parallel minor tetrachords is added.
This set is identical to the one presented in the introduction on strings 5 and 6,
except that it is one octave higher.

With the addition of this new parallel tetrachord set on strings 3 and 4,
it is possible to construct a box with a spread of three frets
that spans the four bottom strings (figure 1.07).

The index finger falls on fret 7 throughout as does the ring finger on fret 10.
The middle finger is on frets 8 on strings 5 and 6, and on strings 3 & 4 it falls on fret 9.

This provides an easy and comfortable way to navigate an octave and a half of the scale.

In figure 1.08, we combine the red box with an auxiliary lower extension represented by the black box.

As described in the introduction, it is a simple matter to transition between these two boxes by either sliding the index finger down a whole step to move from the red box to the black box or by sliding up a whole step with the ring finger to move from the black box into the red box.
